The species is popular with modern gardeners as a putatively medicinal plant In Sanskrit, the ancient language of Ayurveda, the word for aloe vera is kumari, which means ‘a beautiful young girl.’ Aloe vera is known in Ayurveda as that which keeps a woman always youthful.

- Non edible Aloe-vera: Aloe vera var. chinensis has less thick, narrow spotted leaves and produces orange flowers. This is the Aloe vera variety that is commonly sold for treating burns.
- Edible Aloe-vera:Aloe vera barbadensis Miller has thick, wide, fleshy upright leaves which are gray-green in colour, and produces yellow flowers.
